Day One: Flight, hotel and city

The day was long, but it ended in music, food and smiles in Guatemala.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., our Delta passenger plane took off from Toronto Pearson International Airport en route to Alabama, Georgia. There was no entertainment on this plane, but books are a thing and the team was definetly talkative.

The United States stop was short and we were on our way again on our final leg of the journey, this time entertained by movies, shows and built-in music.

We dropped smoothly into Guatemala City around noon, and made our way out into a new country. Spirits were high and people were excited. Davinsky rolled up with a bus that really felt like a long van, it was comfortable.

Next, we arrived at a Guatemalan restaurant akin to Swiss Chalet and McDonald's-weird mixture but mots people agreed the food was great.

After lunch, we made our way through the ever-shrinking streets to our hotel, looking curiously out into new place through the expansive bus windows.

Upon arrival, we entered the hotel withour luggage. First, we went through a foyer space that opened into a two story tall main dining room, with a check-in desk to the right and a more private dining room in the back. It was a beautiful buiding with a balcony that over looked the lower floor that was lined with hotel room doors.

We were sent to the third floor, however, where we threw our stuff in before heading out on a walk with Davinsky to explore the nearby city.

We visited a majestic, massive cathedral that had existed since the 1600s and then the first Pres. church of Guatemala.

Afterwards, the team was really tired so we headed back to have dinner, but not before grabbing ice cream and going by the Presidential Palace.

As the team goes to sleep for a well-deserved rest, we await a 7 a.m. start tomorrow for orientation and another day in Guatemala City. We leave for Sayaxche on Mar. 14.

Keep us in your prayers.
